The artist / Der Künstler
Christoph Finkel was born in Allgäu/Germany 1971. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Nürnberg 1992-1998 At present he works as an artist, making sculptures and bowls. He lives with his wife in Blonay/Switzerland. The material he is working with is wood. He finds the trees in his local area and their way of growing, their history and character interest him. It is a long process from the moment he logs the trees until the finished work pice. Finkel tries to recognise the form that nature has already given him. The wood is alive and changeable, it takes different shapes and cracks. He pushes the limit of what is possible with his machine and tools, to make a perfect shaped bowl from a bulky pice of wood. The handcraft is both sensible and difficult because of the living independent material and therefore every pice of work is unique. A selection of bowls can be seen in Norway Designs, Oslo/Norway. Sein bevorzugtes Material mit dem er arbeitet ist Holz. Finkel versucht die Form, die die Natur dem Holz verliehen hat, zu erkennen. Holz ist lebendig und verändert sich, es bekommt Risse und verformt sich.
Er experimentiert und verschiebt die Grenzen der technischen Möglichkeiten von Maschine und Werkzeug, um aus einem rohen Holzklotz eine perfekt geformte Schale zu drehen. Das Handwerk ist zugleich sensibel und schwierig, weil Holz ein lebendiger und eigenständiger Werkstoff ist. Deshalb sind alle seiner Werke Einzelstücke. Eine Auswahl seiner Schalen sind in Norway Designs in Oslo/ Norwegen zu sehen. Im Oberallgäu finden sie seine Arbeiten in "Finkel`s Holzlädele" in Bad Oberdorf.
